Registered Republicans in Cabarrus County can now apply for the commissioner seat Larry Pittman left vacant when he resigned Sept. 30. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.

The Cabarrus County Republican Party announced the formal application process Friday, Oct. 9, according to WSOC-TV. The party's Executive Committee will review packets and recommend one name to the full Board of Commissioners by Friday, Oct. 30, the statutory deadline.

Applicants must have been registered Republicans in Cabarrus County as of Oct. 30, 2025. Each packet requires a cover letter, résumé and candidate vetting questionnaire.

"We thank Commissioner Pittman for his service to Cabarrus County and are committed to a thorough and transparent process to identify a strong conservative who will continue to represent the values of our community," party Chairman Jim Quick said, according to WSOC-TV.

Residents can request an application by emailing [email protected] or calling Quick at 704-796-3882, the Cabarrus Compass reported.

Under North Carolina law, when a commissioner elected as a party nominee leaves office early, the remaining board members must consult that party's executive committee. If the committee recommends a qualified person within 30 days, the board is required to appoint that person. The appointee would serve through November 2028, the remainder of Pittman's four-year term.

Pittman, who took office Dec. 2, 2024, resigned after he and his wife, Tammy, relocated to Pamlico County in eastern North Carolina. He had lived in Cabarrus County since 1990 and previously served in the N.C. House of Representatives from 2011 through December 2022, according to a Cabarrus County government announcement.

Board Chair Laura Lindsey, who also sits on the Republican Party's executive committee, has recused herself from voting on the party's selection to avoid a conflict of interest, the county announcement said.

The Oct. 24 application deadline falls after North Carolina's early voting period opens Thursday, Oct. 15. The party's Oct. 30 recommendation deadline lands one day before early voting closes at 3 p.m. Oct. 31.

Election Day is Nov. 3.
