Concord Mayor Steve Morris will present a special proclamation to the Sidney Lanier Book Club on Monday, Nov. 9, honoring the group's 90th anniversary.

Eight women founded the club in November 1936, gathering in a Concord home with a shared desire to learn, according to The Cabarrus Compass. The club has maintained its focus on lifelong learning, fellowship and community service across nine decades, the Compass reported.

Morris was elected mayor in November 2025 after serving 12 years on the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners. He will deliver the proclamation at the anniversary event.

The Cabarrus Compass, in a story by Chris Miller, reported additional details about the club's history and traditions. A venue and time for the Nov. 9 celebration were not included in available reports.
