Lidl is recalling a gelato product after lab testing found Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness.
The voluntary recall covers one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces, sold in 16-ounce containers at Lidl stores in North Carolina and nine other states, according to WSOC-TV. The affected gelato was distributed to stores between July 19 and Oct. 15.
No illnesses have been reported.
The recall was triggered after routine quality testing identified the bacteria in a lab sample, according to a company announcement dated Oct. 16. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration posted the recall Oct. 17.
Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults may experience high fever, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The bacteria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to the company's recall notice.
How to check your freezer: The recalled gelato comes in a clear plastic container with a brown lid. Flip the tub over and look for UPC 4 0564897 22458, lot number 085261 and a best-by date of March 26, 2028. All three identifiers must match.
What to do: Throw the product away or return it to any Lidl store for a full refund. No receipt is needed.
The recall covers Lidl stores in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. North Carolina shoppers in the Charlotte metro area fall within Lidl's distribution footprint for the affected lot.
Customers with questions can call the Lidl US Customer Care Hotline at 844-747-5435, available Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
