Students and workers using Rowan-Cabarrus Community College's two Concord campuses will keep their access to federal financial aid and transferable credits after the college secured a 10-year accreditation renewal through 2036.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges finalized the reaffirmation in June 2026, and the college announced the milestone Wednesday, Aug. 5. The accreditation covers every RCCC location and program, including the Cabarrus Business and Technology Center at 660 Concord Parkway N. and South Campus at 1531 Trinity Church Road, along with all online offerings.
For Concord-area residents enrolled in workforce training or degree programs, the practical effect is straightforward: Pell Grants, GI Bill benefits and other Title IV federal aid remain available, and credits earned at RCCC will continue to transfer to four-year institutions.
President Carol S. Spalding said the reaffirmation demonstrates the dedication of the college's employees and the strength of its academic programs, calling it a shared accomplishment across the institution.
The 18-month review
SACSCOC requires the more than 780 institutions it accredits to undergo reaffirmation every decade. RCCC's process stretched a year and a half. Faculty and staff compiled a Compliance Certification and Focused Report examining academic programs, student services, operations and outcomes. An on-site review team visited multiple campuses in September 2025, meeting with Board of Trustees members, students, faculty and staff.
Reviewers highlighted the relationships students have with faculty and the support they receive throughout their time at the college, according to the announcement.
"This achievement shows the College's commitment to accountability, responsible stewardship and continuous improvement," Board of Trustees Chair Cynthia Mynatt said. "Most importantly, it reinforces the confidence that students, employers and community members place in Rowan-Cabarrus."
Local workforce pipeline
The accreditation matters for more than traditional degree-seekers. The Cabarrus Business and Technology Center in Concord houses skilled-trades programs including a new plumbing certificate launching this fall. The college awarded 2,095 associate degrees, diplomas and certificates to its Class of 2026 at a May 15 commencement ceremony at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center in Concord.
As part of the reaffirmation, RCCC adopted a new Quality Enhancement Plan called "Forward Together: Pathways to Success," which redesigns the college's first-year experience course to help students build stronger academic foundations early.
Fall classes are now enrolling at both Concord campuses and online.
