William Baggs Sr., the incumbent Cabarrus County Superior Court Clerk, is running for reelection. The general election is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026.

Baggs, a Republican, has held the office since 2010, according to his campaign Facebook page. He is 81. He faced two Republican primary challengers, Resa Travis and Ben Cox, in the March 3 primary and is certified for the general election ballot, according to BallotReady election data.

His candidacy comes as he faces a removal complaint filed Jan. 13 by Cabarrus County resident Keith Fitch. The complaint alleged misconduct and lack of mental or physical capacity to perform duties, the Charlotte Observer reported. A Superior Court judge found probable cause but declined to suspend Baggs from office.

Baggs denied all wrongdoing and attributed the complaint to political retaliation, the Observer reported.

On the capacity question, Baggs said he went through two rounds of chemotherapy and can no longer use his legs but said he is otherwise in good health. Baggs said he moved into an assisted living facility after a tree fell through the roof of his home, the Observer reported.
