Cannon School's 4-0 start is over.

Providence Day pulled away in the second half on Friday, Sept. 25, handing the Cougars a 34-14 loss in Charlotte and dropping Cannon to 4-1 on the season, according to WBTV.

Providence Day, ranked No. 2 in the Charlotte Observer's N.C. Super 25 poll, improved to 5-1. The Chargers have won three straight since their only loss, a 30-3 defeat to Hough on Sept. 4.

For head coach Jamaal Birch's Cougars, the loss snaps a run that included wins over High Point Christian Academy (42-28), Oceanside Collegiate Academy (22-21), Ravenscroft (49-14) and Charlotte Christian (52-19). Cannon outscored those four opponents 165-82 through the first month.

Wide receiver Marcus Sales, who committed to Ohio University after breaking the 1,000-yard receiving mark in a prior season, is among the offensive weapons Birch will lean on as the Cougars look to rebound. In an Aug. 28 WSOC-TV Big 22 profile, Sales described the work ethic that fueled his rise: "I just wanted to work … I wanted to see my body change in different ways, and I just wanted to make my family proud."
