Carson hosts Concord after scoreboard controversy
Carson (3-3, 1-2 SPC) returns home after a 21-7 loss to Northwest Cabarrus on Saturday, Oct. 3, in China Grove. That game ended in bizarre fashion.
Northwest scored for a 21-7 lead with 6:47 left in the fourth quarter, but the scoreboard malfunctioned and showed only 2:15 remaining, according to the Salisbury Post. Carson athletic director Josh Trexler said game film confirmed 6:47 was the correct time. The officiating crew did not agree and told Carson the game would restart with under three minutes on the clock.
Trexler called it a "bogus" game and told officials Carson would take a knee in protest. Officials declared the contest over and left the field.
The loss dropped Carson to 1-2 in conference play. Northwest Cabarrus (5-1, 3-0 SPC) remained tied for first in the SPC with Robinson and West Rowan.
Concord (1-5, 0-3 SPC) enters Friday still searching for its first conference win. The Spiders' lone victory came Sept. 4 against North Gaston, 42-0. Conference losses to West Rowan (56-0), South Rowan (27-10) and Jay M. Robinson (42-3) have been lopsided.
Undefeated A.L. Brown hosts Central Cabarrus
A.L. Brown (6-0, 3-0) hasn't lost. The Wonders are off to their best start since 2015, according to WBTV, and are ranked No. 25 in North Carolina by MaxPreps. They beat Olympic 38-21 on Saturday, Oct. 3, in Kannapolis.
Central Cabarrus (1-5, 0-3) has dropped five straight since beating Montgomery Central 21-14 on Aug. 20. The Vikings lost to Cox Mill 28-21 on Friday, Oct. 2, in their most recent outing. Head coach Donnie Kiefer, in his second year of his second stint leading the program, told the Independent Tribune in August that he is "not interested in mediocrity."
