Chris Marin scored twice as the Concord Spiders beat East Rowan 5-3 on the road Tuesday, Oct. 6, keeping the team perfect in South Piedmont Conference play.
The win in Granite Quarry pushed Concord to 9-0 in conference and 11-4-1 overall, according to MaxPreps. No other SPC team has an unblemished conference record. The Spiders have now won five straight.
That streak started with a 3-1 home victory over Salisbury on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Concord followed with a 5-0 road rout of Jay M. Robinson on Thursday, Oct. 1, then carried the momentum into Granite Quarry against the Mustangs.
Marin's two goals paced an attack that has produced 51 goals in 16 matches this season under head coach T. Strode. Concord has allowed 34.
East Rowan did not fold. Patrick Sanchez scored twice for the Mustangs and Moises Cornelio added a goal, according to the Salisbury Post. Goalkeeper Giovanni Fuentes made five saves. The loss dropped East Rowan to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in conference.
The eight combined goals made for a wide-open match, a departure from the low-scoring conference games that have defined much of Concord's SPC run. The Spiders' 9-0 conference mark is the only unbeaten record in the South Piedmont 4A/5A, per MaxPreps.
Concord returns to action Thursday, Oct. 8, at Carson in another SPC match. The Spiders then host West Rowan on Tuesday, Oct. 13, Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday, Oct. 15, and Jay M. Robinson on Tuesday, Oct. 20, before traveling to Salisbury on Thursday, Oct. 22.
