Stacy Bowen, a special education teacher at Coltrane-Webb STEM Elementary School in Concord, has been named Cabarrus County Schools' Exceptional Children's Teacher of Excellence.

The district announced the award on Thursday, Sept. 24. Bowen will be honored at the 75th Annual North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) Conference on Exceptional Children, running Nov. 3–6 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro.

The award recognizes Bowen's work with students with disabilities at Coltrane-Webb, a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) school serving about 386 students in grades K–5. She is one teacher in a district of 43 schools and more than 35,700 students.

"Stacy sees the potential in every student and helps other educators see it, too," Angela Fitzwater, Cabarrus County Schools' director of exceptional children, said in the district's announcement. "Her work makes a difference for students, families and colleagues across Cabarrus County Schools."

At Coltrane-Webb, Bowen uses student data, classroom observations and collaboration with colleagues to tailor instruction for children with disabilities. The district said she helps students build confidence, independence and a sense of belonging in their school community.

Her influence reaches beyond her own classroom. Bowen has served as an exceptional children chair at multiple schools, mentored teachers, presented at new employee orientation and guided student teachers, according to the district.

Superintendent John Kopicki said in a statement that Bowen's leadership "makes a difference far beyond one classroom," crediting her willingness to share what she learns with fellow educators across Cabarrus County Schools.

The NCDPI conference page lists the Educator of Excellence Showcase on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 5. The conference can accommodate up to 2,300 participants. Its theme this year: "Brilliant Past. Bold Future: 75 Years of Exceptional Children."
