Every Carolina Hurricanes shot on goal this season will generate 50 meal equivalents for children and families across North Carolina, including in Concord and Harrisburg.

Food Lion Feeds and the Hurricanes launched the program, called Stick It To Hunger, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, the same day the team opened its 2026-27 season at Lenovo Center in Raleigh. The partnership caps donations at 150,000 meal equivalents over the regular season, according to a Food Lion press release.

The donations will support the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation's work to increase access to food and nutritional education for children statewide.

Kevin Durkee, manager of Food Lion Feeds, said the grocery chain wants neighbors to know they can count on Food Lion every day. "Partnering with the Hurricanes is another way we can help families put nourishing food on the table and enjoy those everyday moments together," Durkee said in the announcement, as reported by the Salisbury Post.

Amy Daniels, executive director of the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation, said the partnership will help the foundation reach more families statewide.

Food Lion operates stores across the Concord and Harrisburg area, including locations on Winecoff School Road, Concord Parkway South, Cabarrus Avenue and Highway 49 in Harrisburg. The Salisbury-based grocer is one of the largest employers in the region.

The meal-equivalent figure reflects Food Lion Feeds' combined investments, including product and financial donations, disaster relief and volunteer hours, converted using the organization's internal formulas. It does not represent a count of individual meals distributed.

The need is real. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, which serves 24 counties including Cabarrus County, reported on Wednesday, Sept. 30, that 500,000 people in its service area face food insecurity. Of those, 152,000 are children, according to WSOC-TV. The food bank said it helped feed 200,000 more people in 2026 than the year before.

Kay Carter, CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, urged residents to help when the report was released Sept. 30. "You can help by donating food, donating funds … host a food drive, host a fund drive, and volunteer," Carter said.

Stick It To Hunger joins Food Lion Feeds' other sports-based hunger programs, including Sack To Give Back and Score to Give More, which tie donations to football, basketball, baseball and soccer. Those partnerships include the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and the Carolina Ascent Football Club.

Food Lion Feeds has donated more than 1.5 billion meal equivalents since its founding in 2014. The organization's goal is 3 billion by 2032.

No specific distribution timeline or local partner for Cabarrus County has been announced. The Hurricanes' next home game offers the first chance for local fans to watch shots translate into donations.
